Second Hari Gawai Festival at SEV

Both a religious and social occasion, Hari Gawai takes place in the end of May where the Iban communities gather together as a form of thanks giving day. The festival was first celebrated on 1st June 1965 and has since then become a symbol of unity, aspiration and hope for the community. 

Celebration varies from place to place however they are all tied by the same features which is lively in spirit and guests will be able to enjoy the traditional drink known as “tuak” and other local delicacies within their community such as penganan (cakes from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk) or  glutinous rice is steamed in bamboo (ngelulun pulut).

The festival will also be alive with traditional music as well as a colourful array of costumes. Apart from thanks giving and coming together as a community Hari Gawai is also a showcase of the locals to portray who they are and where they come from and thus celebration of their ethnic group  which aims to keeping their culture and tradition preserved for the coming generations.

The event will be held in Sumbiling Eco Village Temburong and we are inviting you to this one of a kind occasion.

There are a limited number of seats available -60 and we work on a first come first serve basis.

$ 100 however first few EARLY BIRDS will receive an exclusive discount of 25%!

ACTIVITIES

Activities include a one night camp at our secured campsite as well as an opportunity to join the Gawai festivities. You can also make use of our facilities and engage in activities such as river tubing and floating!

Packing List:

Bring light rucksack, changes of clothes, sun lotion, hat/cap, raincoat, camera, binoculars (especially for bird watchers), l, toiletries, swimwear, insect repellent (non‐aerosol type) such as Tiger Balm, snacks.

Other:

‐ Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints.

UPDATED ITINERARY - SEV 01

Tour Name : Green Holiday at Sumbiling Eco Village
Tour Code : SEV01
Tour Duration : Approximatively 9 hour





A 45‐minute speedboat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through 
meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, its a short drive and a little trek 
through the jungle to our Eco Village. After enjoying light refreshments of tea and local pastries, cross to the 
other side of the Temburong River by temuai (local longboat). Passing abundant growth of ʹsimpurʹ and bamboo, 
the trek in the forest will show you the ʺrainforest as a supermarketʺ to the villagers. Search for edible fruit, 
medicinal herbs like wild local ginseng as well as other useful plants. Relish the adventure of crossing the 
Mutong River, river trek and, subject to river condition, floating down Mutong River or Temburong River by 
rubber tube or bamboo raft (tube and raft use is chargeable). Freshen up then enjoy a hearty lunch prepared by 
local villagers. Some relax and photo time, and if time permits, a visit to an Iban longhouse before departing for 
Bangar, and returning to BSB by speedboat.

A 45‐minute speedboat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, its a short drive and a little trek through the jungle to Sumbiling Eco Village. After enjoying some light refreshments, embark on a temuai (local longboat) ride up the Temburong River to the National Park, with rapids and strong currents for a true adrenalin rush! During low tide, you might even have to come out of the temuai to push it along! Upon arrival, a challenging trek takes you up to the Canopy Walkway ‐ a climb up presents the different levels of the rainforest below the shady canopies, topped with a breathtaking vista of the surrounding greenery. Return to temuai, and head for a beautiful waterfall, where you can have a swim, before returning to the Eco Village. Once close by, you may also opt to float on a rubber tube or bamboo raft back to the Eco Village (tube or raft use chargeable). Freshen up then enjoy a hearty lunch prepared by local villagers. Some relax and photo time, and if time permits, an optional visit to an Iban longhouse. Depart for Bangar, returning to BSB by speedboat.

The fun begins with a 45‐minute speedboat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, its a short drive and a little trek through the jungle to Sumbiling Eco Village. After settling in, the rest of the day will be spent interacting with villagers who will take you wild vegetable gathering, on a night forest walk after dinner and to visit their longhouse.

Rise early to witness sunrise and prepare for the day. After breakfast, cross to the other side of the Temburong River by temuai (local longboat).
