Macrobrachium rosenbergii, also known as the giant river prawn, the giant freshwater prawn, the Malaysian prawn, freshwater scampi (especially in India), or the cherabin, is a species of freshwater shrimp (not a prawn or scampo in terms of phylogeny, although colloquially "prawn" can refer to freshwater shrimp or true prawns) native to the Indo-Pacific and northern Australia. This species (as well as other Macrobrachium) is commercially important for its value as a food source.

While this species is considered a freshwater one, the larval stage of the animal depends on brackish water. Once the individual shrimp has grown beyond the planktonic stage and become a juvenile, it will live entirely in freshwater.

This species of shrimp can get quite large, attaining a length of over 30 cm (12 inches) ^[1].

Males can reach a body size of 32 cm;females grow to 25 cm. In mating, the male deposits spermatophores on the underside of the female's thorax, between the walking legs. The female then extrudes eggs, which pass through the spermatophores. The female carries the fertilized eggs with her until they hatch; the time may vary, but is generally less than three weeks. A large female may lay up to 100,000 eggs.

From these eggs hatch zoeae, the first larval stage of crustaceans. They go through several larval stages before metamorphosing into postlarvae, at which stage they are about 8 mm long and have all the characteristics of adults. This metamorphosis usually takes place about 32 to 35 days after hatching. These postlarvae then migrate back into freshwater.

There are three different morphotypes of males. The first stage is called "small male" (SM); this smallest stage has short, nearly translucent claws. If conditions allow, small males grow and metamorphose into "orange claws" (OC), which have large orange claws on their second chelipeds, which may have a length of 0.8 to 1.4 their body size. OC males later may transform into the third and final stage, the "blue claw" (BC) males. These have blue claws, and their second chelipeds may become twice as long as their body.^[2]

Male M. rosenbergii have a strict hierarchy: the territorial BC males dominate the OCs, which in turn dominate the SMs. The presence of BC males inhibts the growth of SMs and delays the metamorphosis of OCs into BCs; an OC will keep growing until it is larger than the largest BC male in its neighbourhood before transforming. All three male stages are sexually active though, and females who have undergone their pre-mating molt will cooperate with any male to reproduce. BC males protect the female until their shell has hardened, OCs and SMs show no such behavior.

The shrimp can be successfully raised in outdoor ponds and is readily available for sale on the Internet. Amateur cultivation of this species is particularly popular in the Midwestern region of the United States.

Etlingera elatior (also known as Torch Ginger, Ginger Flower, Red Ginger Lily, Torch Lily, Wild Ginger, Combrang, Bunga Siantan, Philippine Wax Flower, Xiang Bao Jiaing, Indonesian Tall Ginger, Boca de Dragón, Rose de Porcelaine, Porcelain Rose) is a species of herbaceous perennial plant^{[citation needed]}. Botanical synonyms include Nicolaia elatior,^[1] Phaeomeria magnifica,^[1] Nicolaia speciosa, Phaeomeria speciosa, Alpinia elatior, Alpinia magnifica.

The showy pink flowers are used in decorative arrangements while the flower buds are an important ingredient in the Nonya dish laksa. In North Sumatra, the flower buds are used for a dish called arsik ikan mas (Andaliman/Szechuan pepper Spiced Carp). It is high in antioxidant, very good for our health.

It is known in Indonesian as bunga kecombrang or honje, Malay as bunga kantan and Thai as kaalaa.

31st July 2010, a group of friends from JOSKS had a 2days1night adventure with Sumbiling Eco Village or in short ecovillage. They do the brand new flying fox of OBBD, arriving to ecovillage by River tubing, trek into pristine Rainforest lead by veteran ex forest Ranger. After dinner Night walk, visit Longhouse at night, back to ecovillage BBQ till midnight. slept in tent & basic room. what wonderful day!

1st Aug- Enjoy a hearty Breakfast and embark on a native motorized longboat called Temuai going upriver, shooting the Rapid to Ulu Temburong National park. Walk 1000 steps uphill and climb up an canopy walkway to have a great view of the Temburong Vast rainforest Canopy! On the way back stop to visit a small but beautiful water fall to chill out! not only that, put your feet into the water, you got yourself a free fish spa. finish off with more tubing along the Temburong River. at Eco village, juicy bamboo chicken and wild vegetable dish waiting for them. Second Hari Gawai Festival at SEV

Both a religious and social occasion, Hari Gawai takes place in the end of May where the Iban communities gather together as a form of thanks giving day. The festival was first celebrated on 1st June 1965 and has since then become a symbol of unity, aspiration and hope for the community.

Celebration varies from place to place however they are all tied by the same features which is lively in spirit and guests will be able to enjoy the traditional drink known as “tuak” and other local delicacies within their community such as penganan (cakes from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk) or glutinous rice is steamed in bamboo (ngelulun pulut).

The festival will also be alive with traditional music as well as a colourful array of costumes. Apart from thanks giving and coming together as a community Hari Gawai is also a showcase of the locals to portray who they are and where they come from and thus celebration of their ethnic group which aims to keeping their culture and tradition preserved for the coming generations.

The event will be held in Sumbiling Eco Village Temburong and we are inviting you to this one of a kind occasion.

There are a limited number of seats available -60 and we work on a first come first serve basis.

A 45‐minute speedboat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through
meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, its a short drive and a little trek
through the jungle to our Eco Village. After enjoying light refreshments of tea and local pastries, cross to the
other side of the Temburong River by temuai (local longboat). Passing abundant growth of ʹsimpurʹ and bamboo,
the trek in the forest will show you the ʺrainforest as a supermarketʺ to the villagers. Search for edible fruit,
medicinal herbs like wild local ginseng as well as other useful plants. Relish the adventure of crossing the
Mutong River, river trek and, subject to river condition, floating down Mutong River or Temburong River by
rubber tube or bamboo raft (tube and raft use is chargeable). Freshen up then enjoy a hearty lunch prepared by
local villagers. Some relax and photo time, and if time permits, a visit to an Iban longhouse before departing for
Bangar, and returning to BSB by speedboat.

A 45‐minute speedboat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, its a short drive and a little trek through the jungle to Sumbiling Eco Village. After settling in, the rest of the day will be spent interacting with villagers who will take you wild vegetable gathering, on a night forest walk after dinner and to visit their longhouse.

The next day, after breakfast, embark on a temuai (a local longboat) ride up the Temburong River to the National Park, with rapids and strong currents for a true adrenalin rush! During low tide, you might even have to come out of the temuai to push it along! Upon arrival, a challenging trek takes you up to the Canopy Walkway ‐ a climb up present the different levels of the rainforest below the shady canopies, topped with a breathtaking vista of the surrounding greenery. Return to temuai, and head for a beautiful waterfall, where you can have a swim, before returning to the Eco Village. Once close by, you may also opt to float on a rubber tube back to the Eco Village (tube and raft use is chargeable). Freshen up then enjoy a hearty lunch prepared by local villagers. Some relax and photo time before departing for Bangar, and returning to BSB by speedboat.

Meet at Kianggeh jetty at Jalan Residency, Bandar Seri Begawan. Depart for an exciting 45 minutes water taxi boat ride, cutting through River Channel lined with pristine mangrove to Bangar town, Temburong. Brief toilet stop & last minutes shopping. Then by van or bus to Sumbiling eco Village. Arrive with welcome morning tea & light snack. Once ready, cross the Temburong River by Temuai- Longboat. Trek into simpur & bamboo forest. Explorer the forest with villager to learn the wonder of Rainforest as a supermarket to the villager who live nearby. Search for edible fruit & herb like wild local ginseng & medicinal plant.

1030hr Depart in smaller group of 10 per group to Motong Heart od Borneo Biodiversity jungle trail. 02 villagers(01English speaking) local guide+01 accompany teacher per group of 10 student. Student learn about Rainforest biodiversity and how local villager use the forest for medicine and food for thier diary live. ( 2 hours)

1230hr Trek out of jungle and proceed for lunch at SEV. ( 45 minutes)

1330hr Proceed by longboat to pulau Buah 500meter from SEV ( Fruit garden to start Traditional Rafting down part of Temburong River back to SEV. Student will learn about river safety & Iban traditional way of life in the river. Life vest will be provided to all participant. Description

Journey begins with an exciting river cruise from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar. Beginning the River Cruise takes us on the Brunei River passing through the famous Water Village known as the “Venice of the East” by early European. Meet and greet by local guide at Bangar Jetty and transfer overland to Sumbiling Eco Village for Morning Tea. Sumbiling Eco Village is an Eco tourism project where local Community of Temburong is involved especially those from Kampong Sumbiling Lama & Batang Duri. It is situated by a calm beautiful Temburong River bank surrounded by rainforest & local exotic fruit trees. Facilities available are traditional Iban huts, jungle herbs trail, camp site, clean modern clean toilets, shower & changing rooms. Later embark on a local Iban open motorised canoe called “Temuai” for an adventure boat ride to Ulu Temburong National Park.

At the Park, register and join a guided jungle walk on plank walkway & jungle trail with more than 1200steps to the Canopy walkway. Along the way, please take plenty of stop to enjoy the environment. Drink lot of water to hydrate yourself. Before you knew it you already reach the base of the Canopy Walkway. Climb up about 300 step up for a bird eye view of Rainforest canopy.

There after retreat back to Sumbiling eco village for lunch. Relax or take a dip by the Temburong River (subject to river condition) or participate in our activities. Nearing the end of our Eco-adventure, travel overland back to Bangar town, where a boat will be waiting to bring you on an exciting river cruise back to BSB with fond memories of Temburong.

Duration: 3days /2 nights

Day 1—Arrival into Sumbiling eco Village ( D)

Meet and greet by local guide at Bangar Jetty and transfer overland to Kampong Sumbiling Lam. A short walk into the forest will bring you to the Sumbiling Eco village. It is an eco friendly village surrounded by Rainforest & wild fruit tree. It has basic amenities like clean modern toilet, lighted by electricity at night, a kitchen to provide meals, herbal trail and hut for meals & relax. An eco tourism destination where local villager is involved. On arrival check into your tent and relax. Free flow of hot Tea & coffee with light snack will be serve. Afternoon activities will be collecting wild vegetable for dinner, fishing, and swimming (subject to River condition) or just relax and enjoy the peaceful environment. At night enjoy a local dinner with insect, frog providing background music. After dinner take a walk into the forest or visit a nearby Iban Longhouse to chit chat with villager. Back to Tent for overnight.

Day 2- Ulu Temburong National Park ( B/L/D)

Wake up by the chirping of wild birds & insect. Enjoy a morning breakfast surrounded by jungle. Relax before time for yet another adventure river trip by “Temuai”- local motorise Longboat to Ulu Temburong National Park. Upon arrival trek uphill with more than 1000 steps in the steaming jungle to reach the canopy walkway. Climb up 100 meters on aluminium structure to have a vast view of the pristine Rainforest of Temburong and back to river. Along the way back, stop by and trek into the rainforest to visit a waterfall. Then continue back to Sumbiling Eco Village for a Bamboo Chicken lunch. After lunch relax & take a rest and enjoy the environment. After dinner take a walk into the forest or visit a nearby Iban Longhouse to chit chat with villager. Back to Tent for overnight.

Day 3 – Motong River adventure (B/L)

Wake up by the chirping of wild birds & insect. Enjoy a morning breakfast surrounded by jungle.

Today, cross the Temburong River and trek with local villager to learn how the local villager use the Rainforest as their supermarket, discover jungle “grape look & taste alike”, Lychee, edible ginger fruit!, jungle natural shampoo! Herbs, medicinal plant and more. Learn about Mutong River ecology & how we can use it with care. Prepare to get wet to cross the Motong River. Do River trekking and use of inflatable tube to float along some part of Motong River. Enjoy the serene environment. Toward the end of Motong, brief jungle trek back to Sumbiling Eco Village.

Sumbiling Eco Village in support of Brunei Tourism KNK program is promoting local tourism within Brunei.

As 1st of June is Iban community New year Harvest Festival celebration called "Hari Gawai". It is a big tourism event both in Sarawak & Sabah. In Sabah they called it "Pesta Kaamatan", Sarawak they called it "Hari Gawai", here why called it "Gawai Festival" in English.

Since this is the first event promoted by Sumbiling Eco Village-- we called it "1st Gawai Festival 2009". Get the ball rolling, more will come in future.

Many program has been lined up for this event. Bamboo Rice, bamboo chicken, variety of local Traditional vegetable, traditional game like blowpipe skill display, local handicraft like basket,headgear,parang, medicinal herbs& stick and many more.

For those still energetic, they can go for a jungle trek to learn about the rainforest and do river tubing down the Motong River. Those who wake up late can also go for a Longboat Joy ride organise by the villager.

Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated in Sarawak on 1 June every year. It is both a religious and social occasion. The word Gawaimeans a ritual or festival whereas Dayak is a collective name for the native ethnic groups of Sarawak: Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, andLun Bawang among others. Thus, Gawai Dayak literally means "Dayak Festival". Dayak would visit their friends and relatives on this day. Such visit is more commonly known as "ngabang" in the Iban language. Those too far away to visit would receive greeting cards.

It started back in 1957 in a radio forum held by Mr Ian Kingsley, a radio programme organiser. This generated a lot of interest among the Dayak community.

The mode of celebration varies from place to place. Preparation starts early. Tuak (rice wine) is brewed (at least one month before the celebration) and traditional delicacies like penganan (cakes from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk) are prepared. As the big day approaches, everyone will be busy with general cleaning and preparing food and cakes. On Gawai Eve, glutinous rice is steamed in bamboo (ngelulun pulut). In the longhouse, new mats will be laid out on the ruai (an open gallery which runs through the entire length of the longhouse). The walls of most bilik (rooms) and theruai are decorated with Pua Kumbu (traditional blankets). A visit to clean the graveyard is also conducted and offerings offered to the dead. After the visit it is important to bathe before entering the longhouse to ward off bad luck.

The celebration starts on the evening of 31 May. In most Iban longhouses, it starts with a ceremony called Muai Antu Rua (to cast away the spirit of greed), signifying the non-interference of the spirit of bad luck in the celebration. Two children or men each dragging a chapan (winnowing basket) will pass each family's room. Every family will throw some unwanted article into the basket. The unwanted articles will be tossed to the ground from the end of the longhouse for the spirit of bad luck.

Around 6 pm or as the sun sets, miring (offering ceremony) will take place. Before the ceremony, gendang rayah (ritual music) is performed. The Feast Chief thanks the gods for the good harvest, and asks for guidance, blessings and long life as he waves a cockerel over the offerings. He then sacrifices the cockerel and a little blood is used together with the offerings.

Once the offering ceremony is done, dinner is then served at the ruai. Just before midnight, a procession up and down the ruai seven times called Ngalu Petara (welcoming the spirit gods) is performed. During this procession, a beauty pageant to choose the festival's queen and king (Kumang & Keling Gawai) is sometimes conducted. Meanwhile, drinks, traditional cakes and delicacies are served.

At midnight, the gong is beaten to call the celebrants to attention. The celebration now turns merrier and less formal. Some will dance to the traditional music played, others will sing the pantun (poems). In urban areas, Dayaks will organise gatherings at community centres or restaurants to celebrate the evening.

Other activities that may follow the next few days include: cock-fighting matches, and blowpipe and ngajat competitions. On this day, 1 June, homes of the Dayaks are opened to visitors and guests.

Traditionally, when guests arrive at a longhouse, they are given the ai tiki as a welcome. From time to time, guests are served tuak. This would be called nyibur temuai which literally means "watering of guests".

Christian Dayaks normally attend a church mass service to thank God for the good harvest.

Gawai Dayak celebrations may last for several days. It is also during this time of year that many Dayak weddings take place, as it is one of the rare occasions when all the members of the community return home to their ancestral longhouse.

Up till 1962, the British colonial government refused to recognise Dayak Day. Gawai Dayak was formally gazetted on 25 September 1964 as a public holiday in place of Sarawak Day. It was first celebrated on 1 June 1965 and became a symbol of unity, aspiration and hope for the Dayak community. Today, it is an integral part of Dayak social life.
